AirTag, really?)īut beyond that, if there’s any part of Apple’s product portfolio that got whacked by the current global economic bad vibes, it was Wearables, Home, and Accessories. Cook went so far as to cite AirTag coming out last year as a reason why the Wearables, Home, and Accessories category was down so much this year. ![]() Pour in some supply constraints, a combination of COVID factory shutdowns and that global silicon shortage, just for a dash of flavor.Īnd finally, there’s the classic bit of financial seasoning, the “tough compare,” when this year’s Apple product announcements just don’t match up with those in the year-ago quarter. (The situation is that the company has largely abandoned Russia as a market following its invasion of Ukraine.) It’s not as if Russia was a huge market for Apple, but it’s a market that’s gone from something last year to nothing this year, and that hurts. Then you toss in a dash of “the situation in Russia,” as Cook and Maestri kept referring to it. Tim Cook cited AirTag as a possible reason why Wearable sales got a boost last year. (Foreign exchange was repeatedly mentioned in Apple’s remarks because the extremely strong dollar makes Apple products that much more expensive in other parts of the world.) Apple says it was largely due to supply constraints and difficulty with foreign-exchange rates. I’m not saying that there’s not one, I’m saying that the data doesn’t show it.” That Mac number could’ve been much worseĪfter a series of all-time record quarters for the Mac, Mac sales tumbled 10 percent versus the year-ago quarter. Or, as Cook put it, “From an aggregate point of view, looking at it worldwide, looking at the data on iPhone for the June quarter, there’s not obvious evidence in there that there’s a macroeconomic headwind. Cook cited a quarterly record for iPhone buyers who were switching from Android and called out strong sales in developing markets such as Indonesia, Vietnam, and India.Įssentially, the iPhone behaved as if there was nothing bad going on in the world. Sales were up by just a little, but given everything else, that’s a victory. All in all, Cook said, Apple should be less constrained in the coming quarter than it was in this last one.Īnd before we turn our attention to other matters, let’s take a moment to appreciate how the iPhone–the heart and soul of Apple’s business–just keeps motoring along. (If you tried to buy a new Mac in the last three months and had to wait a while for your order to arrive, you may not be surprised by this.) Apple thinks that these constraints will ease in the coming months–though you never can tell with COVID!–but that an ongoing shortage of silicon parts will continue. The Mac was especially hard hit since the affected factories included almost everywhere that Macs are assembled. What is Massively Parallel Processing (MVP)? Amazon Redshift is an affordable, fast, and easy way to get your operation up and running. Columnar databases flip the dataset which makes it easy to perform operations. When it comes to row-oriented databases, performing operations is not that efficient. Other benefits of reducing a column-oriented database are that the need for joins is reduced and queries are resolved quickly. This is mainly used in big data, analytics, and data warehouse applications. This type of database management system uses sections of columns instead of rows to store the data. But what exactly is Amazon Redshift? On the fundamental level, it is a combination of two technologies – Column-oriented technologies (columnar data store) and MPP (massively parallel processing). It is the fastest-growing service offered by the AWS. It contains columnar data store with billions of rows of data that are parallel placed with each other. Amazon Redshift does the same for big data analytics and data warehousing. Sending texts is only the tip of the iceberg. AirDroid basically mirrors every capability of your phone onto your desktop. If you haven’t used it, it’s seriously one of the coolest things Android still allows. *To be fair the founder of TechDissected, Cliff Wade, uses MightyText on his 2014 Moto X and has not experienced the same issues. In it’s current state, I can’t recommend it so we must continue on our search. It’s Gmail integration made it extremely easy for me to send/receive texts. However, I needed something more reliable. Refreshing the browser usually was enough to get it go through. I would rather they not have group message capability at all than for it to work unpredictably and unreliably.įinally, sometimes messages wouldn’t actually go through. When a group replies would come in, oftentimes it would completely mix up who actually sent the message or I would get multiple duplicates of the same message. What I do fault MightyText for is the inconsistency in handling group messages in general. A little frustrating but not the fault of MightyText. Any responses from friends would sync to the web interface however your replies would be invisible on your phone. As mentioned before, there is a limitation in newer Android devices that will not allow you sync MMS (picture and group messages) via a web browser. This means I could send group messages through MightyText but those group messages would not automatically sync with my phone. The second issue I faced with MightyText is the way it handles group messaging. I don’t know about you, I don’t have 99% of my friends’ phone numbers memorized. MightyText would also often fail to sync my contact pictures. It would list phone numbers instead of the contact’s name. The first issue I consistently experienced was MightyText not syncing my contacts correctly. Recently, I have encountered enough issues to prompt me to find a replacement (and write this article). I am most familiar with MightyText and have been using it for the last year. They even have a Chrome extension that builds itself into Gmail making it incredibly convenient for those Gmail users out there. The app will of course need to read/write SMS, but it should not require location unless there’s an additional feature that makes sense. It’s okay if the app has an optional installation for PC/Mac. I flip between computers so I’m looking for a web-based interface only. I do not want to install anything on my computer. It must be free (optional in-app purchases are okay). ![]() Let me outline some requirements I had before installing anything on phone: So over the past month, I have tested a variety of the desktop texting apps to find which one works the best option until Google decides to save me. Sadly, I think I’ll be stuck using the limiting SMS/MMS texting for a while. I wish I could get all my family and friends moved over to a chat app like Hangouts or the internationally famous Whatsapp. Thus, we are left with relying on third parties to send texts. I have to trust a third party if I want to send texts from my computer. And to no surprise, Google has dragged their feet in implementing a similar feature in Android. While this is a great feature, it does require that you have a Mac and an iPhone which doesn’t suit everyone. In October of 2014, Apple announced they would natively support texting on OS X. It was a feature I touted to my Apple fans as one of the many reasons I preferred the flexibility of Android. It has been a great luxury to send/receive texts on any computer without worrying about pulling out your phone during a meeting or while working on a project. For at least 4 years, you have been able to send SMS texts from any computer’s web browser on Android. It will also be available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita. Sadly, the still newer 8 GB modules would not work, this was due to two different issues the first was the OS its self as it was still 32bit (Lion being the first full 64bit version) and the other was the systems firmware. So at that time point the memory folks tested things out and their test showed the system could support the bigger modules so you could go up to 8 GB! Now its some where in 2012 the memory folks want to sell more memory and people are bugging them to test the system with the newer 4 GB modules. But Apple had already ended the production of this system (Feb 2012) so Apple never attempted to test the system with more memory. Within a few years memory manufactures came out with 4 GB memory modules. So at that time point Apple did all of there testing with these two setups hence what Apple supports. Apple sold the system in two configs one with 2 GB and the other with 4 GB. So lets start off thinking back in 2010 where things stood.
